Will Thanksgiving serve up more than turkey?

By Alison Adduono, Director of Marketing Communications

Well, the holidays are just around the corner and many of us will be at each other’s homes gathering with loved ones, expressing our thanks while we indulge in turkey and all the usual festive fixings. There are those traveling by planes, trains, and automobiles, some will congregate indoors to escape the cold, and others may be headed into crowded stores on Black Friday to score the elusive deals. No matter where we end up, there are sure to be a lot of people around us, including a lot of germs. A post-holiday COVID-19 surge is sure to be brewing across the US.

While many of us are sitting on a stash of over-the-counter tests or will be ordering the  latest allocation of free tests from COVID.gov, one thing is certain – testing ourselves before we get together with someone else with underlying health conditions or is at-risk if they were to catch Covid-19 makes sense.

In October, the latest Covid booster shot became available. While it was not specifically formulated for the newest Omicron variant HV.1, experts feel it still offers protection against currently circulating strains. Right now, the CDC estimates approximately 14% of adults in the US are up-to-date on their vaccinations.

And while Covid-19 has become as commonplace as the flu, we still need to keep up with good practices to mitigate the spread this holiday season. Frequent handwashing, using sanitizers, covering coughs, masking, isolating when necessary, and most importantly proactive frequent testing is key.

After the holiday gatherings, travel has passed, shoppers have laid down their black belts in retail escapades, the dust will settle, and people will need to be vigilant in keeping an eye out for Covid. Anyone who believes they may have been exposed is best advised to seek out an accurate molecular test to find out if they have become infected.

Pharmacies, urgent cares, clinics, mobile testers, and collection sites looking to make molecular testing more accessible to those seeking it should stock up now before the winter surge.

The AscencioDx® COVID-19 Test and Molecular Detector, proudly manufactured in Redmond, WA, provides affordable, highly accurate and actionable positive test results in as little as 20 minutes. When your patients want to be confident, they are negative --- a point-of-care molecular test is just what the doctor ordered.
